One Thousand and Counting: A Sobering Look at Americans Who Died in Iraq

Behind the numbers marking a sad and symbolic benchmark in the war in Iraq, the members of America's lost battalion look largely like this:

Enlisted Army soldiers in their early 20s killed by a roadside bomb while in a convoy or on patrol. Their deaths came mainly in the bloody "Sunni Triangle" section in central Iraq, including Baghdad, where anti-U.S. sentiment still burns almost 18 months after the war began.

The ranks of the dead include mostly white males on active-duty who most commonly hailed from California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida or Illinois. Fort Hood in Texas or Camp Pendleton in California were home bases to most.
